Supreme Court observes 2-minute silence as nation mourns Pahalgam attack

In a solemn gesture reflecting the grief of a mourning nation, the Supreme Court of India on Wednesday observed a two-minute silence to pay tribute to the victims of the horrific terror attack that took place in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The tribute, observed at 2:00 PM across the Court and its Registry, was marked in complete silence as a token of respect and solidarity with those who lost their lives.

The circular, issued by the Administrative Security Branch, directed all departments within the apex court and its extended wings to pause operations momentarily as a mark of honour. This collective silence was meant to unite the legal fraternity with the rest of the nation in expressing shared grief over the heinous incident.

On Tuesday, a brutal attack unfolded in the serene Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam, Anantnag district, where heavily armed terrorists opened indiscriminate fire on unarmed civilians, killing 28 people, many of whom were tourists. The tranquil tourist spot, often referred to as 'Mini Switzerland' for its scenic beauty, became the site of one of the most gruesome terror acts in recent times.

The Supreme Court’s observance is one among many such tributes being paid across India. Civil society groups, government institutions, schools, and political leaders have come forward to condemn the act and offer their condolences. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and state leaderships across parties have expressed outrage and sorrow.

This attack is being described as the deadliest since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. It has reignited national discourse on counter-terrorism measures, intelligence preparedness, and the need for united condemnation of cross-border terrorism.
